St. Romuald with disciples

The painting on the wall of the vestibule of the gatehouse has been framed with decorative stucco. St. Romuald, the founder of the Camaldolese order, is shown seated. He is facing a group of five disciples dressed in white Camaldolese habits. The composition of the painting repeats very closely the composition of Andrea Sacchi’s painting, which had been distributed as a print and may have been the inspiration for the Bielany painting. On the left side of the composition we can see a scene referring to the dream of St. Romuald – monks wearing white habits, shown from behind, ascending towards heaven.
