The Virgin Mary on the church (top of the facade)
The church at Bielany is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Hence, it should come as no surprise that the top of the church’s facade is decorated with a statue of Mary. The mother of Jesus is depicted with a gilded crown on her head, and the entire figure is surrounded by rays made of gilded iron.
The church’s facade is made of white limestone immitating marble. It is 41 meters wide and 46 meters high. This type of palace facade was adapted by the Italian Baroque for church buildings. With a balustrade rhythmically climbing up the top towards the statue of the Mother of God, the mighty wall gains visual lightness. Its builder was the royal master Giovanni Succatori collaborating with Jacob Lapicida. The church was consecrated on September 14, 1642.
