Eremitorium gate

A gate with the inscription SILENTIUM (Latin for silence) guards the entrance to the monastery area where only monks are allowed to enter.
Here, the monks live, pray and eat most of their meals in evenly spaced cottages. Silence reigns here, and passing Camaldolese monks greet each other with only a nod of the head.
Almost all the cottages are identical, but among them there is one very special. It is intended for a recluse, i.e. a monk deciding (temporarily or for the rest of his life) to retire even more strongly from the world. The recluse does not leave his hermitage, and food and other necessities are provided to him through a special double door.
